Ancient Buddha statues in Sri Lanka


Awkana Buddha Statue

Some of the finest Buddha statute’ in Sri Lanka is found in the Awkana, the Awkana Buddha image is carved from the face of single granite rock. There is a very impressive 12 meter high stand image. It is commonly believed that this statue was constructed sometime in the 5th century during the rule of King Dathusena. Although carved more than thousand years ago, the Awkana Buddha statue is in extremely good condition with its features and details still very sharp and clear.




Yapahuwa Ancient City

This city was the major ancient city of Sri Lanka and its surrounding area became the capital of the island for a short time in the 13th century. The King Buwanakabahu chooses Yapahuwa as the capital due to security problems. The King Buwanakabahu I (1273-1284) made this rock improving sublimely out of the section of Kurunegala his capital. As well as the latest archaeological excavations executed in Yapahuwa tells us that the yapahuwa ancient kingdom had very close diplomatic relationship with China during the 13th century.


Sigiriya


This is an amazing and unbelievable construction in Sri Lanka and Sigiriya was constructed by king Kassapa I in 477-95 lie on the steep slopes and at the height of a granite peak standing some 370 m high. The king palace consists of the central rock as well as the ground and the two rectangular city district on the east (90 hectares) and the west (40 hectares), surrounded by two canal and three walls. The water garden, canals and walls are based on an 'echo plan' matching the layout and design on either side.

Warana Ancient Temple

Just 32 kilometers from Colombo is a small cave temple highly significant to the history Buddhism. Reported to some written information this cave temple is constructed the 2nd and 3rd century BC. Later the King Walagamba did redevelopment in 1st century. The King Walagamba is a very famous for cave temple building in Sri Lanka, because King Walagamba did used to hide among most of those caves when kings from south India attacks in Sri Lanka. After King Walagamba did won the battle and he had built temples in most of these locations or renovate the existing ones. King Nissanka Malla and king Parakarmabahu VI also contributed to the development of this temple.
